ANNEXATION REFORM GETTING ATTENTION IN SENATE
April 19th, 2008 · No Comments
On Thursday the Michigan Senate initiated action on annexation reform legislation on the floor. A substitute (S-1) to SB 1078, sponsored by Sen. Bruce Patterson (R-Canton Charter Township), was approved on second reading and will now move to third reading on the Senate Calendar. SB 1078 amends the Charter Township Act and is part of an overall comprehensive annexation reform package (SBs 1078-1083). An amendment was proposed and defeated that would have modified the bill to match legislation approved by the House (HB 5779) that would protect charter townships with a population of over 20,000. SB 1078 remains on the Senate floor for final consideration.

Annexation Reform passes Michigan House, 100 - 8; on to the Senate
March 19th, 2008 · 1 Comment
The bill that would exempt townships like Northville from annexation by a neighboring city passed the full House today, by a vote of 100 - 8. This was a super-majority. If it passed the Senate by a super-majority as well, and is signed by the governor, it will take immediate effect, and this annexation will be stopped.
